Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture for General Health Conditions

Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture have been used for thousands of years in the treatment of mental health conditions.  Traditionally acupuncture has been used to balance and harmonise the body and mind by providing a tailored approach addressing each persons individual constitution. We work with a range of common conditions such as depression and anxiety as well as post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), pre menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), insomnia, sleep issues and more.

Evidence for acupuncture in managing symptoms associated with stress and anxiety

Statistical research suggests a vast portion of the population suffers from some form of anxiety.  Ranging from mild to severe with both emotional and physical manifestations chronic anxiety often affects quality of life in numerous ways.  Recent research involving clinical trials has found acupuncture to be effective in managing symptoms of anxiety compared to certain pharmaceutical medications. This research also provides insights into the biochemical mechanisms explaining how acupuncture works on both a physical and emotional level.

How acupuncture works to relieve anxiety

1. Increases the release of endorphins - our feel good chemicals which  regulate emotional and physical responses such as heart rate, digestive functions, pain and blood pressure.

2. Improves heart rate variability (HRV) - enabling us to cope with stress more effectively.  HRV is a measure of the variation in time between each heartbeat and a way of determining how we respond to stress.

3. Reduces the release of various neuro-chemicals from the hypothalamus that play a significant role is the stress response - thereby promoting a sense of calm.

Recent evidence has shown acupuncture to be effective in managing the symptoms associated with many painful health conditions.   Strong supportive evidence for the following conditions has been outlined in 'The Acupuncture Evidence Project.'

  • Migraines

  • Headache (both tension and chronic headache)

  • Chronic low back pain

  • Knee osteoarthritis

  • Post operative pain

We also enjoy working with many other chronic pain conditions such as:

  • Painful periods

  • Endometriosis

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Temporomandibular joint pain

  • Sciatica Neck pain

  • Shoulder pain

  • Elbow pain

  • Pain during pregnancy

Allergic rhinitis sufferers are well aware of the nasal congestion, sneezing and itchy eyes that accompany hay fever in spring time.  The high pollen count in Victoria is often the cause of hay fever's onset in Spring.  As pollens attach to the mucous membranes in the nose, antigen - antibody reactions cause symptoms of sneezing, nasal congestion, watery eyes and itch.

Acupuncture is fabulous for managing the symptoms associated with hay fever.  Clinical research has found acupuncture treatments to be effective in treating hay fever within 4 weeks of twice weekly treatments. Great news for those who suffer with these symptoms each year!

Ideally we aim to see patients 4 weeks prior to the onset of the pollen season. We also prescribe tailored Chinese herbal formulas to take between treatments and throughout the first few months of the pollen season.
