Dietary considerations to supporting general health
Aim to eat a variety of whole foods including fruits and vegetables of different colours which are in season. This will supply you with a broad variety of minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. A healthy digestive system is important for strong immunity as a large portion of the immune system is located within the digestive tract. From a Chinese medicine perspective these foods are best eaten warm as they support the digestive functions of the spleen and stomach.
Assist the health of your digestion by reducing sugar which is known to feed and increase the harmful bacteria in your gut. Focus on foods that assist the proliferation of healthy bacteria such as: bananas, asparagus, chicory, raw honey, starchy root vegetables, leafy green vegetables, nuts and seeds, garlic, leeks, onions and bone broth.
We are now heading into cooler weather so it is ideal to adjust to the season by sipping warm drinks and herbal teas. Ginger, manuka honey, cinnamon, lemon juice and peel is great for this time of year.
If you feel you are not getting what you need from your diet you may wish to supplement with vitamins and minerals that are known to support and maintain a healthy immune system. These may be found in a quality multivitamin or immune support supplement.
Vitamin B complex – provides energy production and aids in the production of infection fighting cells.
Vitamin C – supports both the immune system and its response to infection
Vitamin D – essential for a healthy immune system and is important over the winter months when we are on getting enough sunlight.
Vitamin E – a potent antioxidant that can modulate immune responses
Zinc – assists the immune system in fighting of invading bacteria and viruses
A broad spectrum probiotic – Promotes good gut bacteria in the digestive tract which is supportive of the immune system. Certain strains may regulate immune responses reactions from asthma, allergies and viruses.
Go easy on alcohol, sugar and processed foods as these can exacerbate pre existing health conditions, anxiety and create inflammation which all have an impact on immunity. It is also best to limit cold and raw foods as well as excess dairy or fatty/greasy foods. These foods are known to produce 'dampness' in the body which is not ideal for immunity and resistance to illness.
MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT
The impact of schools closing, working from home, physical distancing and isolation measures are challenging times for everyone and prolonged isolation can take its toll on our mental health. The uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic is unsettling and anxiety provoking for many.
Aim to reduce stress by talking to friends, creating new ways to socialise with social media and Skype or zoom. Limit media exposure as constant, negative and disturbing footage has an impact on anxiety levels and overall mental health. Aim to be informed with set times to watch the news or ask a friend or family member to update you. If you feel overwhelmed and are finding it difficult to cope with your current circumstances please call us to discuss your needs.
