Dermatology & Skin Conditions

From a Chinese medicine perspective the internal organ systems control and regulate the skin.  When there is disharmony within the body various types of skin conditions can manifest outward to the skin.

Our consultations address your skin concerns by taking a comprehensive analysis of your current health and history then providing a Chinese medicine diagnosis and personal plan to restore your skins health.  We assess digestive health, reproductive health, hormones, sleep and stress levels amongst other systems to determine the underlying cause of your skin condition.  A combination of herbal medicine, supplements, external skin preparations and acupuncture may be prescribed.

We expect results to be seen within 3-6 weeks and more noticeable results after 8-10 weeks.  Our aim is to reduce or eliminate the need for pharmaceutical medications such as corticosteroids, Methotrexate, Roaccutane, antibiotics and heavy barrier creams.

In women with hormonal or cystic acne a different approach may be taken as this type of acne is generally associated with their menstrual cycle.  This type of acne often takes longer (3-6 menstrual cycles) to see a significant change.

Common skin conditions we see in our clinic:

  • Acne

  • Adolescent acne

  • Eczema

  • Psoriasis

  • Rosacea

  • Seborrheic dermatitis

Digestive health & skin conditions

A strong focus of our skin care consultations is directed at correcting any digestive issues.  It is not uncommon for us to see skin conditions coexisting with disturbances of the digestive system and microbiota. Modern research views this imbalance in gut microbes to promote the occurrence of many health issues including inflammatory skin conditions.

The bacteria, protozoa and fungi that make up our microbiome also provide a vital role in skin health and overall wellness.  When our diet is not optimal, microbes begin to grow in higher amounts which reduces the amount of health promoting good bacteria that extend to our skin microbiome.

Promising studies on herbal medicines have shown herbal medicine to  possess microbiome regulating effects which thus have a positive effect on skin health.  Our herbal prescriptions and supplement recommendations take into account these effects and are utilised in providing ongoing care for our dermatology patients.
